Mugga Quarry Expansion

Expansion of Boral's Mugga Quarry Operations: New Overburden Bund and Emplacement Area for sustainable resource management.

Boral Quarries | Symonston, ACT

Project overview
The project involved an expansion of Boral's Mugga Quarry (ACT) operations to enable extraction of high quality hard rock through establishment of a new permanent overburden bund and temporary emplacement area to store quarried overburden and weathered rock material. The new bund and emplacement area is located to the north and east of the quarry pit extent between Mugga Lane and Callum Brae Nature Reserve within the leased area.

Our involvement
EMM was engaged by Boral Resources to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to detail the anticipated environmental impacts of the development, as well as proposing avoidance and mitigation measures. The site contains multiple operations, including extracting and processing rock, concrete batching, asphalt manufacturing and materials recycling. Key potential impacts associated with the project included biodiversity, air quality (dust emissions), Aboriginal cultural heritage, visual, soil and hydrology, noise and vibration and hazards, for which effective management measures were devised. The project delivered a range of economic, environmental and social benefits including:

  • Continued production and operations without comprising the amenity of the surrounding area;
  • Continued supply of aggregates and other quarry products, including specialty products, to major road and infrastructure projects; and
  • Maintaining employment opportunities that continue to benefit the local and regional economy.
