Dungowan Dam

Water Infrastructure NSW sought approval to build and operate the Dungowan Dam and pipeline project approximately 50 km south east of Tamworth, New South Wales. The project would improve water security for the Tamworth region, which faced critical water shortage during the most recent drought.

Project overview
The Dungowan Dam was declared a Critical State Significant Infrastructure (CSSI) project and includes a larger new dam downstream of the existing Dungowan Dam and a replacement pipeline. The project would deliver improved water security for town water supply as Tamworth’s water demand grows, replaces aging infrastructure, significantly reducing serviceability and dam safety risks and provides substantial local opportunities during construction of the project.
Our involvement
EMM was initially engaged to undertake the scoping phase including the preparation of scoping report, and referral under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). EMM was subsequently engaged to lead the approval processes under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and EPBC Act, including identification of environmental constraints, potential impacts, and mitigation approaches to inform forward project planning and construction.
