Project overview
Cross River Rail (CRR) is being delivered in partnership with the private sector through three major infrastructure packages of work: the Tunnel, Stations and Development (TSD) public-private partnership; the Rail, Integration and Systems (RIS) alliance; and the European Train Control System (ETCS) contract.

The Cross River Rail Delivery Authority (CRRDA) is overseeing the CRR project for the Queensland Government. The project comprises a new 10.2 km rail line running from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, including 5.6 km of twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and central business district. In addition, the project will introduce an advanced ETCS which will provide a modern signaling system with features such as automatic train protection and automatic train operation.

The project will deliver four new underground stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street and Roma Street, and upgrades to Dutton Park and Exhibition stations.

Our involvement
TSD
EMM Consulting provided an extensive range of environmental services on TSD for the Cross River Rail project to ensure safe and efficient construction.

Our experienced team of environmental professionals conducted over 260 soil sampling locations, 45 soil bores with acid sulfate sampling, 36 groundwater well installations and continue to undertake quarterly groundwater monitoring events at up to 50 locations. In addition, we provided waste classification services, tank removal and validation sampling, surface water sampling, durability assessment and sampling, design advice, and site environmental support.

Our expertise in large scale construction projects and large rail projects enabled us to manage contaminated land issues and acid sulfate soils and groundwater monitoring, whilst ensuring the safety of construction workers and meeting the project’s tight deadlines.

Our team provided support in conducting social, air quality, and dangerous goods assessments to ensure the Cross River Rail project minimised its environmental and community impact. Our thorough assessments identified and mitigated potential impacts, providing an invaluable contribution to the successful progression of the project.
