On 4 April the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its most recent report, from its third working group on climate change mitigation strategies.

Alarmingly, the report concludes that in order to limit warming to 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must peak by 2025 and then decline rapidly and significantly to meet the 2050 target.   The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres remarked that a 45% reduction in GHG emissions relative to 2010 levels is needed this decade to stay within 1.5 degrees.

EMM’s ESG Specialist Shanthi Herd says that ‘At this juncture our big emitters will need to be innovative to achieve this step change emissions reduction, and it is more important than ever for all businesses to manage their climate change risk.  Many businesses will be required by their investors, financiers and insurers to demonstrate how they are managing these risks to maintain sustainable value.’

At EMM we have been helping our clients to find cost-effective solutions for managing their GHG emissions and climate change risk.

Scott Fishwick, EMM’s Air Quality Leader said ‘We apply a simple but rigorous methodology to quantify and prioritise our client’s highest value GHG emission reduction opportunities.  We then work with our client to identify mitigation measures that are practical and achievable for their business.’

‘Our approach to climate change risk assessment is based on our analysis of accepted climate change modelling and similarly identifies key risks from future projected climate change to our client’s assets and operations. We workshop potential mitigation and adaptation measures with our client, often collaborating with specialists in other technical and engineering disciplines to find solutions.’
