Welcome Dr Doug Weatherill to EMM!

It is with great pleasure that EMM’s Adelaide office introduces the commencement of principal groundwater modeller Dr Doug Weatherill. Doug is a highly esteemed groundwater modeller with specialist modelling skills in variable-density groundwater flow and solute transport modelling, applied tracer testing and fractured rock hydrogeology.

Doug played an integral role in writing the Australian Groundwater Modelling Guidelines. He has also authored many journal papers and over the past decade, has lectured and presented at a range of Industry training courses, seminars and conferences.

Doug joins EMM’s well established water team who have significant experience in both groundwater and surface water. Our water team is located in Adelaide, Sydney, Newcastle and Perth and we operate nationally with projects in all Australian states.

The new “Noise Policy for Industry” breakfast seminar presented by EMM with key note speaker from the NSW EPA

EMM hosted an event with key EPA noise policy staff following release of the new “Noise Policy for Industry” on 27 October 2017 which replaced the existing Industrial Noise Policy (2000).

The new document balances the need for industrial activity with the community’s expectations to minimise noise impact. It sets assessment noise levels, consistent assessment methods, and best practice measures to manage industrial noise using latest scientific research regarding the effects of noise. Thank you to all of our clients who took the time to attend.

Features of the new policy were presented to industry stakeholders in the NSW Hunter Region, with a focus on what the changes are and what they could mean to their current operations and future approvals.

It was a very successful and informative session for all, overlooking the beautiful Newcastle beach.

Stay tuned for a similar event in Sydney in early 2018.

“We would like thank the LendLease Bouygues Construction Joint Venture for their generosity in arranging a site visit of the NorthConnex (NCX) tunnel project. It certainly gave us an appreciation of the practicalities of tunnel construction, which is of particular interest to the Snowy Hydro 2.0 EIS team. It was also great to see the water management plan, which EMM assisted NCX to prepare, in action.

Phil, Anto and Laurie all complied with the ‘no beards’ requirement for the site visit. So a special thanks to NCX from their partners…”

Najah Ishac, Director and Acoustics Leader at EMM, was joined by Stephen Hafer, Development Manager, Boral and Fiona Binns, Associate Director at Urbis as panellists at a recent PIA presentation “BEYOND PLANNING – TRICK OR TREAT?” They gave their expert insights into the tricks of the trade with regards to dealing with some of the specialist disciplines that planning and property professionals regularly work with. The presentation was a great success with a solid turnout to the event. Feedback was very positively received. Some where even given the opportunity to test out some of the high tech Acoustic monitoring equipment.

I recently completed a Churchill Fellowship examining coastal management in the US, Caribbean and UK. The report is now published. It considers the factors that lead to success or failure in coastal relocation schemes. I will be presenting a few key findings at the NSW Coastal Conference at Port Stephens in November. Chris brings to EMM over 12 years of surface water consulting experience. He has demonstrated expertise in a wide range of surface water resource fields including environmental assessment and management, water balance modeling, flood risk management, river restoration, storm water management, water quality investigations, geomorphology, catchment yield assessments and civil design.

Chris has lead and undertaken work on projects for a range of sectors including: extractive industries (mining and quarrying), heavy industry, waste management, residential and local and state governments. Projects are multi-disciplinary and involve working closely with other technical specialists including environmental, groundwater and engineering.

As we heard at the 2017 Construction Materials Industry Dinner on Friday night, it is a busy time for those who produce concrete and the materials that go into it. We are proud to be able to continue to assist our concrete and quarry clients with environmental approvals, management and a range of other services to allow them to continue to produce one of the most important building materials in the world. EMM Consulting Pty Limited (EMM) is delighted to announce the appointment of Nathan Garvey to the role of Associate Ecologist in our Newcastle office.

Nathan will be playing a key role in our growing ecology team, providing high level technical advice to our clients in the Newcastle, Hunter and north coast regions and across NSW.

Nathan has over 15 years’ experience in ecological assessment across eastern Australia. He possesses strong project management skills and has led teams working on some of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects. Nathan has experience in the mining, oil and gas, linear infrastructure, renewable energy and residential development sectors. Nathan has a strong grasp on biodiversity assessment and approvals, and is one of NSW’s leading experts in the area of offsetting.

Nathan brings a strong client focus to projects. With a strong grasp of the approvals process and an innovative, whole-of-project approach Nathan delivers solutions for our clients, working with teams to deliver high quality outcomes.

CITY 2 SURF 2017

Last Sunday, over 20 of the EMM team joined the masses in this year’s City2Surf. Representatives from our Sydney, Brisbane and Newcastle offices took part and we were again blessed with a breathtaking morning (quite literally) as we made our way through the city streets to the iconic Bondi Beach. A number of this year’s team achieved their goals with personal best times common on race day and it’s safe to say hydration proved to be a key component of the post-event celebrations at Bondi Bowling Club.

As part of this year’s City2Surf, we were running for one of our own by raising money for Breast Cancer Network Australia to ensure that they can continue to support Australian women and their families. Thanks to the generous support of our friends and families, we managed to smash our target of $2,000, with more than 30 donations contributing more than $3,650 and counting.

Thanks to all of the EMMers who took part in this year’s City2Surf and we look forward to bouncing back bigger and better (and a maybe little bit faster) next year!

EMM is delighted to announce the opening of our Adelaide office. Our South Australian business will be led by Paul Gibbons, Associate Environmental Planner.

Since finishing his senior environmental specialist – approvals role at Iluka Resources in 2016, Paul has been highly effective in working with the South Australian operations of a number of our key clients and a number of clients new to EMM. He will now formally expand EMM’s planning and environmental consultancy by opening our fourth office.

Paul has over 17 years industry experience in major project and infrastructure service delivery. He has expertise in planning and environmental approval processes and has completed project leadership roles for resource, energy, water and transport clients in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

Paul is passionate about understanding a clients’ real needs and working in partnership to deliver high quality outcomes. His communication and leadership skills, industry knowledge, and experience liaising with government agencies and key stakeholders have allowed him to effectively deliver a wide range of projects.
